Description

[Islamic Numismatics]. TWENTY-TWO CATALOGUES FEATURING ISLAMIC COINS. A strong group of important sales of Islamic numismatic material, including: seventeen Sotheby’s Islamic sales, dated 12 October 1978,* 23 April 1980,* 11 March 1981,* 29 April 1981, 14 October 1981, 28 April 1982, 12 October 1982,* 18 February 1983,* 7 April 1983, 20 April 1983, 18 October 1983, 17 April 1984*, 12 July 1984,* 15–16 November 1984**, 21–22 November 1985**, 20–21 May 1986**, and 4 April 1991; plus Spink Zürich’s Auctions 22 and 27*; plus Morton & Eden’s sales of 4 April 2011, 23 April 2012, and 10 April 2014. Catalogues indicated with an asterisk include the prices realized list; those with two asterisks are only partly devoted to Islamic coins. Very good to near fine copies. A good group of modern auction catalogues focusing on Islamic coins. The spring and autumn Sotheby’s Islamic sales, most of which are represented here for the period covered, offered truly exceptional pieces from the earliest coinages under Islam through the modern period. Also present are the Hunt Islamic sale, and the record-breaking 2011 Morton & Eden sale.
