Two volumes, complete. 8vo, contemporary matching maroon half morocco, gilt, with red sides; spines with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt; marbled endpapers. xiv, 226 + vi, 152 pages; 17 + 11 fine plates. First volume with detached boards, the first taped; spines worn; interiors near fine. A scarce two-volume catalogue of the collection formed by James Carnegie, Ninth Earl of Southesk (1827–1905). Based on manuscript notes by the collector, the catalogue was brought to fruition by his daughter. Sinkankas 1151: “Describes 449 gems, plus an additional 159 cylinders: material, shape, dimensions, provenance, etc. The collection was begun by the Earl in 1878. ... Good quality plates depict as many as twelve gems per plate.”
