Description

McSherry, Richard. M. THE NATIONAL MEDALS OF THE UNITED STATES AND ESSAYS AND ADDRESSES. Baltimore: John Murphy & Co., 1897. 8vo, original red cloth, gilt. (2), 245, (1) pages. Binding a trifle dusty; near fine. Inscribed on the second free flyleaf: "Michael Jenkins Esq., With best wishes for 1898 from his old friend R.M. McSherry, 1 Jan. 1898." This collected edition is not recorded in Sigler or Davis (a similar copy, inscribed to Rev. Wm. E. Starr, appeared in Kolbe Sale 56). Apparently rare. In the preface, the author notes: "The paper on 'The National Medals of the United States' was published and distributed by the Maryland Historical Society in 1887. The edition was soon exhausted, but correspondents still continue to ask where a copy can be obtained... In deciding to publish these papers, and add some addresses and essays of special interest to the writer, this little book has evolved." Ex November 27–28, 1971 Katen Fuld sale, lot 234; ex Harry W. Bass, Jr. Library, with his bookplate; ex Kolbe Sale 91, lot 813.
