Description

Cist, Charles. SKETCHES AND STATISTICS OF CINCINNATI IN 1851. Cincinnati: Wm. H. Moore & Co., 1851. 8vo, original blue embossed cloth; spine lettered in gilt. Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard. viii, (13)-363, (1) pages, complete; text illustrations, some of them full-page; 18 additional plates, mostly engraved and with tissue guards, including a sample note plate printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson opposite page 189. Some spotting and browning, as usually seen. Very good or better. An important book on Cincinnati, during the city's heyday. Editions were published in 1841, 1851 and 1859 (see following). A growing industrial hub, the Midwest city included amongst its businesses several engravers and die-sinkers, including, at the southeast corner of 4th and Main Streets, the banknote engravers Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, an engraved sample note of whose can be found opposite page 189 in this copy. Copies are frequently encountered with this note having been removed. Ex Michael Sullivan Library.
