Strobridge, William H., and T.R. Strobridge. AUCTION SALE CATALOGUES. New York, 1862-1879. Twenty-three different auction catalogues, bound in six volumes as follows (an asterisk * indicates that a catalogue is hand-priced): Volume I: W.H. Strobridge, both the pre- and post*-sale versions of Adams 1; Volume II: W.H. Strobridge, Adams 2*, 3* (with unpriced addenda), 4*, 5, 6, 7* (named), 8* (named), 10*, 11*; Volume III: W.H. Strobridge, Adams 13*, 16*, 18, 19*, 20*, 21*; Volume IV: W.H. Strobridge, Adams 22*, 26*, 28*; Volume V: W.H. Strobridge, Adams 27; Volume VI: T.R. Strobridge, Adams 1*, 6, 7*. Varying 8vo formats, later matching burgundy morocco with marbled sides; spines ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt, with the thicker volumes having four raised bands; original printed paper covers bound in. The margins of the 1863 Lilliendahl sale (Adams 6) are cropped. Sale 6 is erroneously given as 5 on the sixth volume's spine. Generally fine. Adams 1-8, 10-11, 13, 16, 18-22, 26-28 for W.H. Strobridge and 1, 6 and 7 for T.R. Strobridge. A solid group, accounting for 20 of the 29 catalogues issued by the talented William R. Strobridge and an additional three issued by his son, T.R. Strobridge. Of the William Strobridge series, Adams writes: "Beginning with the Lilliendahl sale of May 1862, there follows an absolutely superb series of auction catalogs. While relatively brief in number (twenty-nine), these are unsurpassed in quality of content; twelve--more than 40%--receive a rating of A or better and only the non-numismatic sales fall below a rating of B." In November 1876, William Strobridge lost his sight, an affliction which became permanent and with which he lived for the final twenty-two years of his life. His son, Timothy Rix Strobridge, attempted to carry on the cataloguing business, but managed only eight sales of his own, none of which rose to his father's level of distinction. An attractive and mostly priced set, with two of the catalogues featuring buyers' names. Ex Cardinal Collection Library.
