Description

Frossard, Ed. NUMISMATIC AUCTION CATALOGUES. Eleven catalogues, dated: February 8, 1898; March 8-9, 1898; April 19, 1898; May 10, 1898; June 14, 1898; September 20, 1898; October 25, 1898; February 10, 1899; June 27, 1899; September 15, 1899; and November 22, 1899. All 8vo, original printed paper covers (Sales 152, 155, 156, 161 and 162 lack both). Sales 152 and 154 are hand-priced on thick paper. Sales 155, 161 and 162 have a taped spine. Generally very good or better. Adams 152-159 and 161-163. Sale 153 is rated A in early silver and U.S. gold by Adams, and A- overall: "Proof 1846 ?¢. Complete $I mint marks: 1870-cc, 1871-cc, 1872-cc, etc. Complete $1 gold." This group includes some of the last of the true Frossard catalogues, given that Frossard died on April 12, 1899. The business was continued by his son of the same name (Edwin, actually, but close enough to continue as Ed.), who presumably wrote Sales 161-175 himself. The uninterrupted continuation of the business implies that the son had been involved for some time. Frossard Senior's death happened to coincide with an effort by the ANA to update its membership roster, removing from the ranks members who had not kept their dues current and offering members the opportunity to obtain a lower membership number in cases where one was available. In an unusual tribute, Frossard's membership number (14) was retired in memory of the recently deceased officer and charter member.
