Barber, John Warner. MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS, BEING A GENERAL COLLECTION OF INTERESTING FACTS, TRADITIONS, BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES, ANECDOTES, &C., RELATING TO THE HISTORY AND ANTIQUITIES OF EVERY TOWN IN MASSACHUSETTS, WITH GEOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTIONS. Worcester: Dorr, Howland & Co., 1839. 8vo, original full brown calf; spine ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt; marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece of Boston; 624 pages; engraved hand-colored folding map; numerous woodcut illustrations in the text, including depictions of both sides of a Pine Tree shilling. Binding rubbed, but sound; very good or better. A well-preserved copy of this Massachusetts history. Similar to Baber's 1841 work on New England, which includes some of the earliest illustrations of state coppers, Barber pays some attention to numismatic matters, discussing the Hull and Saunderson mint as well as Jacon Perkins's role in creating the later Massachusetts copper coinage. Howes B123. Ex Q. David Bowers Library.
