Handsome Set of the 1715 Jobert

Jobert, Louis. LA SCIENCE DES MÉDAILLES ANTIQUES ET MODERNES, POUR L’INSTRUCTION DES PERSONNES QUI S’APPLIQUENT À LES CONNOÎTRE. Nouvelle edition. Paris: Chez Jean Boudot, 1715. Two volumes. 12mo, contemporary matching full brown speckled calf; spines with five raised bands, richly decorated in gilt; morocco spine labels, gilt; all edges red; silk markers; marbled endpapers. Engraved title; (24), 264, (4), 265–452, (26) pages; 11 engraved folding plates depicting coins; Avertissement engraving; woodcut initials, headpieces and tailpieces. Early ink stamp on title; first volume lacks front flyleaf. A well-preserved, nearly fine set. The infrequently encountered nouvelle edition of this famous introduction to numismatics, the first having appeared in Paris in 1692. It served as the most popular general guide to coin collecting until superseded by Pinkerton’s Essay on Medals a century later. Rarely seen this nice. Brückmann (1729), 61 & 124.
