Description

The Montenuovo Transylvanian Coins

Hess, A. DIE SIEBENBÜRGISCHEN MÜNZEN DES FÜRSTLICH MONTENUOVO’SCHEN MÜNZCABINETS. Frankfurt am Main, 22.–26. September, 1880. 8vo, contemporary red cloth-backed marbled boards; hand-lettered spine label. (2), xvi, 222 pages; 1414 lots; 6 lithographic plates of coins. Original printed prices realized list bound in. Very good. Very scarce. One of the earliest offerings of material from the vast collection of Wilhelm Albrecht, First Prince of Montenuovo (c. 1819–1895). John Spring, in his Ancient Coin Auction Catalogues, does a good job of delineating the history of the Hess firm. Founded by Adolph Hess (d. 1912) in 1870, the Frankfurt firm was active in the auction market by 1880. When he retired from the business in 1893, it became Adolph Hess Nachfolger. In 1931, a branch was established in Luzern, Adolph Hess AG, which conducted auctions as well. The Frankfurt business was eventually transferred to Dr. Busso Peus (1902–1983), and began operating under his name in 1941 and as Dr. Busso Peus Nachfolger in 1966. Clain-Stefanelli 11815. Grierson 276: “est régulièrement employé comme ouvrage de référence.”
