Description

An Original Set of Heiss on Spain

Heiss, Aloïss. DESCRIPCION GENERAL DE LAS MONEDAS HISPANO-CRISTIANAS DESDE LA INVASION DE LOS ARABES. Madrid: R.N. Milagro, 1865–1869. Three volumes, complete. 4to, contemporary matching brown half morocco with marbled sides; spines ruled and lettered in gilt. xi, (5), 433, (3) + (8), 502 + 298, (2) pages; 25 handsomely executed portrait plates; 203 excellent plates of coins; 2 folding facsimiles of documents; 3 plates of seals. Bindings worn, with backstrips detached or taped; contents very good or better, with only occasional foxing or browning. One of the classics of Spanish numismatics. In spite of its age, it remains a foundation work on the coins of the Spanish possessions in Italy and the Low Countries, as well as in Latin America. The charm of the superb portraits of Spanish rulers is entirely lost in both of the reprints. Worthy of rebinding. Clain-Stefanelli 11362*: “An old classic still generally used as a basic reference.” Grierson 170. Mateu y Llopis 182. Rada y Delgado 312–313. Ex Edmund Nordheim Library, with his bookplate.
