Description

Luxembourg Bronze Medal of Merit 1972
Circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the head of Adolph of Nassau facing right above a laurel branch, circumscribed ‘ADOLPHUS MAGNUS DUX LUXEMBURGI NASSOVIÆ DUX (Adolph Grand Duke of Luxembourg and Duke of Nassau), signed ‘F. Rasumny’; the reverse inscribed ‘VIRTUTI’ (Merit) within a wreath of oak; on original ribbon mounted for wear in the Luxembouregois style; in original case of issue. The Order was originally established by Duke Adolph of Nassau on 8 May 1858. Abolished when Nassau was subsumed into the German Empire in 1866, it was reinstated as a Grand Ducal order in 1890 and recognises meritorious actions or heroic deeds in the name of Luxembourg. Félix Rasumny (1869-1940) was a leading Art Nouveau sculptor, exhibited frequently at the major Paris salons from 1889 and was made chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur in 1933.The population of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is less than 500,000 and as a consequence, all its decorations are comparatively rare. This example was awarded to Mr. P.M. Buoy, Postilion at Buckingham Palace, followoing the State Visit to London of the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. 13 to 16 June 1972. Condition I.
