Description

Claudius II Gothicus, AD.268-270. Æ Antoninianus (18mm, 2.61g). Cyzicus mint. 4th emission. ca.mid-September AD.270. IMP CLAVDIVS P F AVG. Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Claudius II right. / VICTORI-A-E GOTHIC. Two captives seated at base of trophy. Cf. RIC 242; RIC V/1 online, temp. 977. Scarce and popular type. The reverse of this coin celebrates Claudius II's Gothic Victories, and was struck the year he succumbed to the plaque that ravaged his soldiers during the Gothic campaigns.
