France, HONOR TO SURGEON ODILION MARC LANNELONGUE, 1901, Medal, UNC; France, HONOR TO SURGEON ODILION MARC LANNELONGUE, 1901 Medal, UNC, Bronze Plaquette: 70 x 55mm by Jules-Clément Chaplain (French, 1839-1909). Monnaie de Paris with cornucopia. OBV: Half-length figure, left, of Prof. Lannelongue in academic robes, wearing the Legion d’Honnneur and the Palme Academique. In the exergue: AU PROFESSOR O M LANNELONGUE/ Mere DE L’INSTITUTE ET DE L’ACADEMIE DE MEDICINE. Signed: L C CHAPLAIN 1901, lower right edge, above exergue. REV: A seated worker wearing sabots and a leather apron, and with his right arm in a sling, along with a woman wrapped in a scarf and holding a two or three year old child, face right and are greeted by the female allegorical figure of surgical medicine who places her right hand on the child’s head while holding a carpenter’s hand brace in her left hand. In the field between the figures, this Latin epigram: MENTIS/ MANVSQVE/ PAR/ OPVS, Which John Dillon translates: A WORK EQUALLY OF MIND AND HAND. Odilon Marc Lannelongue, (1840-1911) was a renowned French physician and surgeon. He was also a “celebrity surgeon,” treating many celebrities of the late 19th century, including Léon Gambetta, Sarah Bernhardt, and Félix Faure (president of France) in his last moments.
