Marcus Aurelius. Denarius; Marcus Aurelius; 161-180 AD, Rome, 178 AD, Denarius, 3.29g. Cf. BM-696-7 (different bust type). Obv: M - AVREL ANTO - NINVS AVG Bust laureate, cuirassed r. Rx: C - O - S - III - P.P on l. and r., Salus seated l., placing l. elbow on arm rest and holding with r. hand branch (or two poppies?) over snake coiled and raising head on ground before her. Ex Curtis L. Clay Collection; ex Solidus, eBay, 20 August 2015. According to Schmidt-Dick's Typenatlas, this particular Salus type occurs only once on Roman coins, namely on denarii of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus in c. 178 AD.. EF
