Description

Domitian. Sestertius; Domitian; 81-96 AD, Rome, 85 AD, Sestertius, 21.82g. Cf. RIC-362 (R3). Obv: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM COS XI CENS POT P P Bust laureate r. with fold of aegis on front shoulder. Rx: S C in exergue, Victory standing r., head l., crowning Domitian with r. hand and holding palm with l.; Domitian wearing military dress stands l. beside Victory, holding thunderbolt and spear. A rare early variant of this reverse type, which is not distinguished from the normal type in the standard catalogues. In the normal type Victory both stands and looks left, placing her weight on her right leg, as for example on RIC-474, pl. 148. In the variant type she instead stands right, placing her weight on her left leg, and therefore has to turn her head left to regard Domitian.. VF / aVF
