Description

Hadrian Double-Portrait As. 40-as; Hadrian Double-Portrait As; 117-138 AD, Rome, 117 AD, As, 11.50g. RIC-78 (R3), pl. 59 (this coin). Obv: IMP CAES DIVI TRA PARTH F DIVI NER NEP TRAIANO HADRIANO AVG Bust laureate, cuirassed r., seen from front, fold of cloak on front shoulder. Rx: Same legend as on obverse, but different bust type: Bust laureate r. with bare chest, fold of cloak on front shoulder. This side of the coin is slightly cupped and shows us some metal welling up around the edges of the die, so it will have been struck from the reverse die, while the flatter cuirassed portrait was struck from the obverse die. Ex Curtis L. Clay Collection; ex Spink, Num. Circ., Sept. 1994, 5477. Possibly unique: a similar coin reported by Cohen-844 from the Parisian coin dealer M. Hoffmann might have been the same piece..
