Hadrian. Sestertius; Hadrian; 117-138 AD, Rome, c. 125-8 AD, Sestertius, 27.39g. RIC-736 (R3), pl. 85 (citing De Nicola: this coin). Obv: HADRIANVS - AVGVSTVS Bust laureate r., with fold of cloak on front shoulder. Rx: EXPED AVG in exergue, P - M - TR P CO - S - II[I] around, S - C across lower field, Emperor on horse prancing l., raising r. hand in greeting and with cloak flying from shoulders. Apparently a mule or short transitional issue: the elimination of P M TR P from the reverse legend should have coincided with the shortening of the obverse legend to HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS. Our coin may be unique: RIC-736 and Banti list and illustrate only this specimen, which was formerly in the collection of Prof. De Nicola . EF / aEF
