Head of the young Queen to the left, on truncation the engraver's signature "W WYON R A. // DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS. The Queen as Una stands next to a male lion, below: MDCCCXXXIX / W WYON R A. Variety with edge inscription: DECUS ET TUTAMEN * ANNO REGNI TERTIO*. Fr. 386; K./M. 742; Spink 3851. GOLD. Extremely rare. Only 400 pieces struck. Proof. In PCGS Slab, graded PR 63 Deep Cameo ­ Small edge knock, otherweise uncirculated Struck to mark Queen Victoria's succession to the throne, the reverse features the youthful Victoria depicted as Una, representing truth. She is shown leading a lion, symbol of Britain, into one of the greatest eras of British history. The Latin inscription "DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS" can be interpreted as MAY GOD GUIDE MY FOOTSTEPS. This magnificent gold coin by William Wyon is broadly considered to be the most beautiful British coin ever minted.
