SELEUCID KINGDOM OF SYRIA.
SELEUCUS I NICATOR, king 321-280 BC. Tetradrachm of the Alexander type, Antiochia on the Orontes, after 300. AR 16.70 g. Head of Heracles r., wearing lion skin. Rev. ΣEΛEYKOY - BAΣIΛEΩΣ Zeus, wearing himation, nude to waist, seated l. on throne with high back-rest, holding long sceptre with his l. hand, on his outstretched r. hand, Nike taking off to crown him; in outer l. field, monogram. Newell, WSM 98, 923.A7/P9 (this specimen, illustrated on pl. XVII, 9); Houghton-Lorber I, 19, 13.2; Le Rider, Antioche 25, 34 (this specimen).
Scarce. Powerful style and high relief. Old cabinet tone. Extremely fine
