Anne silver "Expedition of Vigo Bay" Medal 1702 MS64 NGC, Betts-94, MI-235/17. 47mm. Obverse signed G.F.N. (George Friedrich Nürnberger) and G.H. (George Hautsch), reverse signed MB in ligature (Martin Brunner, also of Nürnberg). An exceedingly rare historical medal, the reverse depicting the Spanish fleet positioned at the head of Vigo Bay with the allied fleet drawn up in line of battle at the mouth of the bay. Spain's defeat in the battle proved immensely costly, due to both the capture of its treasure and destruction of its fleet, with Britain subsequently striking coinage inscribed with "VIGO" to commemorate this event and the use of the captured bullion for its own coinage. An important medal, and one of the most difficult types of the Betts series to obtain. Sold with old collector's envelope. From the Dresden Collection
