Robert III gold Lion of 5 Shillings ND (1390-1403) XF40 NGC, Edinburgh mint, Heavy coinage, S-5154. + ROBЄRTVS : DЄI : GRA : RЄX : SCOTTORVM (saltire and pellet stops) crowned arms in beaded border / + XPC : RЄGnΛT : XPC : VInCIT : XPC : IMPЄRΛT, St. Andrew crucified with a lis to either side. Amongst the first hammered gold coins to be issued in Scotland. Superb, produced to a high standard, its highpoint softness almost entirely due to the rusted and worn dies used and not from actual circulation wear. Considerable warm color floods the planchet, the gold intensely rich from its almost pure composition overlaid with a fire-yellow tone. Highly appealing to the eye, a type absent from most high-tier Scottish collections.
