Description

Florence. Republic 1/5 Scudo ND (1st Semester of 1530) AU55 PCGS, MIR-70/18 (R3). Niccolo di Braccio Guicciardini as mintmaster. •+• FLOR | ENTIΛ •, stylized lily / • S • IOΛN | NES • BATISTA, St. John the baptist enthroned, head turned slightly right, staff in left hand, shield above right; behind, arms of Guicciardini with N above. By all indications an extraordinarily rare emission from around the end of the Florentine republic before the domination of the Medicis. We have been able to locate only a single other specimen coming to auction in the past several decades--a lower grade raw piece that brought the equivalent of $5082 in Numismatica Ranieri's November 2011 Auction 3 (Lot 82).
