Description

Hamburg. Free City gold Specimen "Bankportugalöser" Medal of 10 Ducats 1863-Dated SP63 PCGS, Gaed-2122. 34.70gm. By H. Lorenz. Obv. Floating angel holding flaming sword and palm branch over city arms, burning church in the background. Rev. The newly built church, previously destroyed after the fire in Hamburg in 1842. Struck on the inauguration of the St. Nicolai church, this ornate gold medal displays a level of intricacy, which places it in an elite tier of artistic quality, the dazzling design confirming the indisputable skill of the engraver while showcasing a remarkable view of the medal's subject, presented in good relief against pleasingly reflective golden fields.
