South Africa South African Reserve Bank 100 Pounds 29.1.1952 Pick 100a PMG Very Fine 30. Arguably the most impressive type of all South African banknotes. Nicknamed "The Big Blue", this large sized example represented the kind of money, the bearer could buy farms with. Only 30,000 were printed, and unlike other South African issues, where the languages (Afrikaans/English) varied every 1 million, "The Big Blue" saw a different predominating language for every successive note. Somewhat underrated, this note appeals to South Africa collectors, and Rare / Iconic collectors alike. Jan Van Riebeeck and his ship on the face, and the South African Crest on the back. The date of this Pick, 1952, happens to be 300 years after the arrival of Van Riebeeck in 1652. Simply a marvelous portrayal of currency artistry for the time.
