LYDIA. Sardes. (or PHRYGIA. Synnada.) Ca. 166-128 BC. AR cistophorus (27mm, 12h). NGC XF. Ca. AD 160-150. Serpent emerging from cista mystica; all within wreath / Two serpents entwined around bow and bowcase decorated with aphlaston; ΣΑΡΔΙ civic monogram of Sardes to left, horizontal amphora to right. Kleiner-Noe Series 5. The holder identifies this issue as Phrygia, Synnada, which is Kleiner's opinion, while Noe feels this series was struck at Lydia, Sardes. This cataloger would tend to opine with Noe, given the translation of other monograms within the series and their close proximity to similar issues of Pergamum.
