Description

Ivan III (Ivan VI Antonovich) Rouble 1741-CПБ XF45 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM207.2, Dav-1676, Diakov-6, Bit-21 (R1). Obv. Laureate, and mantled, bust right with order ribbon. Rev. Crowned double-headed eagle holding orb and scepter, with date above. In many ways the present example represents an ideal circulated representative of this very scarce type, the strike well-centered and conveying an impressive boldness to the legends and central features, the patina uniform and darkening in accents around the devices, the fields calm and revealing no significant instances of handling. All stated, a must-see candidate for the advanced Russian collector. Ivan was the nephew of Czarina Anna. Anna, being in bad health, adopted Ivan and named him her successor. Anna died when Ivan was only two months old and he was proclaimed Emperor shortly thereafter. Less than a year later, Ivan's cousin Elizabeth seized the throne with the help of the palace guards and Ivan, and his parents, were put in prison. Ivan remained in prison for over 20 years, when he was killed by prison guards acting on instructions from Catherine II. From the Morris Collection
