Struck in order to alleviate the silver coinage shortage in the mid-19th century, this type was set roughly to the standard of the Spanish 8 Reales. The eventful life of use in trade is evident in these issues by the near ubiquitous presence of chopmarks across their surfaces, a fact that remains true for the present example, which displays pleasing argent surfaces and an abundance of these characters.
