Charles II "Joanna" Cob 8 Reales 1680 Mo-L XF (Shipwreck Effect, Repaired), Mexico City mint, KM46, Cal-642. 8.00gm. Broken and Repaired. Salvaged from the "Joanna" (sunk in 1682 off South Africa). Possibly showing an unlisted 1680/79 overdate. The East Indiaman ship "Joanna" was on its way to Surat, India, when got separated from the convoy and sunk off South Africa in 1682. It carried 70 chests of silver, of which only the equivalent of about 28,000 Guilders could be contemporaneously recovered. Rediscovered in the 1980's, the wreck has produced thousands of Mexican Cobs, usually with surface corrosion but some with rare dates from the reign of Charles II.
