Wurzburg. Maximilian I Joseph gold Goldgulden ND (1817) MS64 NGC, Munich mint, KM-M11, Jaeger-149, Fr-286. A stunning example of the so-called "New Year's" Goldgulden, this boldly lustered piece–the only of its type certified at NGC–features rose-tinged striations that add a warm visual texture. A minor planchet dig is noted on the King's neck. The former Prince Bishopric and then Grand Duchy of Wurzburg was incorporated into Bavaria in 1814 following the Napoleonic Wars. Paying homage to local tradition, King Maximilian I Joseph distributed this type as a "New Year's" gift to favored city officials.
