Description

PONTIC KINGDOM. Mithradates VI Eupator (120-63 BC). AR tetradrachm (33mm, 16.69 gm, 11h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 3/5. Dated Seleucid Era Year 212, 12th month (86/5 BC). Diademed head of Mithradates VI right, with windswept hair / BAΣΙΛEΩΣ / MIΘPAΔATOY / EYΠATOPOΣ, stag standing left on ground line, head lowered to graze; star within crescent above ΠΡΦ monogram in left field, BIΣ (date) above MAPK monogram in right field, IB (September) below, all within ivy wreath. DCA 692. DCA2-561. HGC 7, 340. De Callataÿ D3-R1. The imagery on the obverse deliberately evokes the memory of Alexander the Great, depicting himself as a semi-divine conqueror with flowing, windswept hair.
