Confederation gold "Alliance with France" Medal 1777-Dated UNC Details (Obverse Spot Removed) NGC, Haller-108. 74mm. 243.63gm. By B. Duvivier. LUDOVICUS XVI FRANCE ET NAV REX Draped bust of King, right // FŒDUS / CUM HELVETIIS / RESTAURATUM / ET STABILITUM / MDCCLXXVIII Five lines within wreath. Massive in size and drenched in lavish luster, this frosted rarity delivers a bounty of eye appeal. Complete with an original loop, this marvelous example is significantly larger and heavier than the other comparable pieces that we were able to locate, suggesting the possibility that this is a unique specimen. We were able to track down a past sale of this exact piece from October, 2018 (Sincona #50, Lot 1194), when it hammered for approximately $110,000. The renewal of the alliance between France and the Swiss cantons was solemnly celebrated at the French embassy in Solothurn. To mark the occasion, which theoretically guaranteed Swiss neutrality and independence, the French presented the Swiss ambassadors with gold and silver medals.
