John V Palaeologus (AD 1341-1391), with Anna of Savoy, as regent. AV hyperpyron (22mm, 3.46 gm, 6h). VF, graffito. Constantinople, AD 1341-1347. ANA-IW-EN XΩ, Anna of Savoy (on left), trifoliate scepter in right hand, placing left hand on breast, and John V (on right), cruciform scepter in right hand, akakia in left, both standing facing; sigla: Γ/• in left field / AN/ΔP/ONI/K/OC, Andronicus III (on left), kneeling facing, Christ (on right) standing facing, crowning emperor with right hand; IC/XC in right field. Sear 2466 (Andronicus III). DO 5.1, 942-3. From the Morris Collection There is a great deal of disagreement between scholars as far as when, who and why these issues were produced, some listing them under Andronicus III and others under John V, stemming from ongoing debate as to which side is the obverse and which is the reverse. Since the sigla appears on the convex side of this issue, this cataloger is following the format of naming it the obverse and listing the issue under John V.
