Transvaal. Republic bronze Mule Pattern Penny 1874 AU58 Brown NGC, Brussels mint, KMX-Pn2 (there, listed under South African Republic / ZAR), Hern-T23. An exceptionally rare pattern struck in bronze, featuring the obverse design of the Transvaal issues paired with a reverse more commonly associated with the Orange Free State patterns of the same year. The surfaces are richly toned in mahogany hues, accented by scattered deeper tones. Hern estimates only five examples of this fascinating mule were ever minted, presenting a rare opportunity for the South African completionist. Ex.
