Yunnan. Republic T'ang Chi-yao gold 10 Dollars ND (1919) MS62 PCGS, Kunming mint, KM-Y482. LM-1057, Kann-1524, WS-0652. Variety with "1" below the tassels on flags. An inspiring representative of this often contested type, and one of the few collectible provincial gold emissions from the Republican era. The current selection astounds when viewed in-hand, not only for its gently-toned surfaces, but the resounding luster preserved on the reverse, laden with originality to the protected recesses of the legends. Kann notes that these emissions were produced following the sky-rocketing of the value of silver in 1919, though the large numbers that were minted--which he estimates at around 900,000 10 Dollar-coins--coupled with the receding value of silver in subsequent years, led to many such pieces being melted down and thus are incredibly scarce, especially when approaching similar near-Choice preservation.
