Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1728 S-P AU55 NGC, Seville mint, KM315, Fr-247, Cal-2301. Cross type. A commanding example of this cross type, the penultimate year before the adoption of the bust motif that has become so synonymous with the 8 Escudo denomination. Struck slightly off-center but well-articulated for the type, with most pieces showing characteristically weak obverse features owing to roller die production. Despite some even handling, vibrancy is still visible, with glistening apricot toning mapped along the contours of the raised devices. Our first offering of this lesser-seen assayer since 2017 and our first instance of offering the broader type in 2 years. Out of the six examples graded across NGC and PCGS, this piece is tied at the second-highest grade, surely an eye-catching lot for advanced collectors of Spanish gold.
