Cuiabá. João VI Counterstamped 960 Reis ND (1821) XF45 NGC, Cuiabá mint, KM350, LMB-487, Gomes-J6.31.06 (Rare). Host: Charles III 8 Reales 1805 PTS-PJ from Bolivia (cf. KM73); Counterstamp: type 3 crowned 960 over C within wreath on the reverse, and arms of Brazil counterstamp on obverse (AU Strong). A delightful survivor from this fleeting provincial counterstamped issue, the present offering abounding in eye-appeal and rarity. The well-defined, gunmetal-toned surfaces host the very unusual "Obverse on Reverse" variety, deemed as such by Brazilian numismatists because the denomination stamp (obverse) is struck upon the host reverse instead of the bust (obverse). The normal counterstamped variety is rare as is and usually encountered in VF grades, the highest grade recorded being AU55, of which we sold an example in January 2020 for $13,200 (Heritage Auction #3081, Lot 30263). The scarcity is even greater with this "Obverse on Reverse" variety, as we could locate only a single example sold, which leads us to believe this lot will garner extra attention from advanced Brazilian type collectors.
