Julia Mamaea (AD 222-235). AR denarius (18mm, 2h). NGC Choice AU. Rome. IVLIA MA-MAEA AVG, draped bust of Julia Mamaea right, seen from front, wearing stephane, hair braided in rows and tucked at base of head in small chignon / IVNO AV-GVSTAE, Juno seated left, flower in outstretched right hand, transverse uncertain object cradled in left arm. RIC IV.II 341. Ex Heritage Auctions, Auction 271726 (25 June 2017), lot 38265. The traditional catalog description in RIC calls the object cradled in Juno's left arm a "swathed infant (?)". On some dies, this description seems plausible, on others the object is looks like anything from a club, to a standard, to a palladium. HID09801242017 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
