George III copper pattern Wreath Dollar 1811 PR65 Brown PCGS, ESC-206 (scarce). By I. Phillp. 5 Shillings & 6 Pence, coin-rotation die alignment, "Boulton Family Collection", a gorgeous specimen, fully impressed by the proofing dies, the glittering surfaces lightly bronzed and therefore showing quite a lot of copper red, here accented by some lovely iridescent hues. It would be fair to describe this specimen, therefore, as being Red & Brown. A wonderful example of this pattern "crown" for the Bank of England, one of a series of designs up for consideration during the era of the Napoleonic Wars, when specie values fluctuated continually, a fact that is reflected in the denomination, or value, represented on the reverse of this coin as 5 Shillings and 6 Pence, whereas the traditional silver crown was valued at 5 Shillings. When the war against France ended, all plans for these patterns were dropped, and the Royal Mint issued the now-famous crown for George III engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci commencing in 1818. The PCGS grading insert for this coin indicates that it was purchased some time ago from a sale featuring pieces long held by the family of the master of the Soho Mint, Birmingham. Ex.
