Araucania-Patagonia. New France bronze Essai Fantasy 2 Centavos 1874 MS65 Red and Brown NGC, KM-X12, VG-3859. Fantasy issue produced for Araucanía and Patagonia in southern Argentina and Chile. The French lawyer Orélie-Antoine de Tounens declared himself king of the region in 1860 but was arrested by the Chilean army and deported to France two years later where he died, impoverished, in 1878. A fascinating type, represented here in splendid Gem Mint State condition with a healthy coating of original red.
