According to Pridmore, these imitatives appear to be one of the earliest instances of using Neusilber (German silver) for coinage. Introduced by Singapore merchants around 1834-1836, and suppressed in 1844. Coins imitate the earlier Netherlands East Indies type from Holland and Utrecht and were intended for circulation in British Malaya and modern day Singapore.
