Griquatown. Victoria copper Specimen Penny ND (1890) SP64 Brown PCGS, KM-X9 (previously KM-Pn6), Hern-GT21. Admirable representative of the type, bearing lovely periwinkle-toned frost to the raised devices and original silhouetting. The Griqua were a migratory native people who intermarried with Dutch colonists. In the early 1800s, the London Missionary Society founded Griquatown. However, in 1900, the town was destroyed by the British during the Boer Wars. The tokens from this period, featuring a stylized dove flying with an olive branch in its beak, are undated. In 1890, patterns for the Victoria penny were minted in copper and nickel. HID09801242017 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
