Leopold I gold "Salvator Mundi" Medal of 10 Ducats ND (c. 1683) MS61 PCGS, Horsky-7023. 42mm. 34.73gm. By JM Hoffmann (unsigned). An instantly recognizable type and one of the few earlier renditions we've seen, the vast majority of this popular "Salvator Mundi" type being of smaller size and struck after 1843. The present offering is clearly leaps and bounds above the more modern issues, displaying a more thoughtful and complete portrait of Christ; the reverse city view rendered with considerable depth to rival any contemporary landscape. Examples of this size and age are fleeting at best, with comparable specimens witnessed on the market once every few years, almost always accompanied by some conditional modifier common to these expansive gold types. Deep golden resplendence abounds this survivor, and despite the handful of wisps and contact marks that preclude a finer certification, these ultimately do little to detract from the overall aesthetic character and desirability of the piece on offer.
