Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius (21mm, 3.49 gm, 5h). NGC (photo certificate) Choice VF 5/5 - 1/5, edge chip. Spanish mint, ca. 19 BC. CAESAR-AVGVSTVS, bare head of Augustus right; dotted border / SIGNIS / RECEPTIS, round shield inscribed CL•V between aquila (on left) and signum (on right); S-P / Q-R around, linear border. RIC I 86a. Among the honors voted by the Roman Senate in 27 BC to Augustus was the Clipeus Virtutis, or shield of valor, which was given, along with branches of laurel, to a soldier who had saved the life of a comrade in battle.
