Description

"Muhammad' Ali Pasha - Overland Route to India" bronze Medal 1842-Dated MS62 Brown NGC, Pudd-842.2 (R). 58mm. By A. J. Stothard. Mehemet' Ali or Muhammad' Ali Pasha, known as the founder of modern Egypt, played an instrumental role in developing an overland route from Great Britain to India via Egypt in the mid-1800s. Upon the encouragement of Mr. Thomas Waghorn, who spearheaded this overland or "Red Sea" route, Muhammad' Ali set up agency houses to facilitate mails between Cairo and Suez, providing a line of communication for passengers who would make the trek between those two major hubs before embarking to India.
