Victoria gold "Shield" Sovereign 1880-M AU58 NGC, Melbourne mint, KM6, S-3854. Part of the heavily contested 1880s Melbourne shield series, the selection at hand sits at the highest grade for this type presently awarded at NGC, with just five pieces outranking it at PCGS. A pleasing example hosting dynamic cartwheel luster on the reverse, nearly achieving Mint State status but for the light surface rub on the Queen's hair and obverse chatter preventing a higher certification. The last time we auctioned an equally graded piece in December 2019 it realized $4,800 all in, and this visually more appealing example is expected to attract at least as vigorous bidding. Ex.
