Description

CENTRAL EUROPE. The Vindelici. 1st century BC. AV stater (17mm, 6.26 gm, 5h). NGC AU 4/5 - 4/5. Regenbogenschüsselchen type. Triskeles counter-clockwise, pellet within an annulet at center, pellet at the end of each leg; all within wreath terminating in annulets / Pyramid of eight pellets within annulets: five on the bottom, two in the middle, and one on the top; all within wavy torc. De la Tour 9441 (electrum). The holder notes this coin as gold, however in hand it closely resembles electrum. The Vindelici occupied a broad region encompassing modern northeastern Switzerland, southeastern Baden, and southern Bavaria. They were subjugated by Tiberius circa 15 BC and remained within the Roman Empire, incorporated into the province of Raetia, even after the Germanic revolt of AD 9. They are regarded as a Celtic tribe, although other groups to the north and south are considered Germanic. HID09801242017 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
