Brabant. Philip IV of Spain "Merenstein" Ducaton 1639 XF (Saltwater Effect), Antwerp mint, Dav-4454. 26.39gm. Salvaged from the "Merenstein" (sunk in 1702 off Jutten Island, South Africa). With a good shield and discernible bust. Accompanied by COA. The Dutch East Indiaman Merenstein was loaded with several chests of silver coins for trade in the East Indies when a reef off Jutten Island torn the ship into pieces. Contemporary salvaging wasn't fruitful, the wreck later re-discovered and salvaged in the 1970's when thousands of Dutch silver coins were retrieved, with much of the treasure yet to be found.
