Description

SASANIAN KINGDOM. Varhran VI (AD 590-591). AR drachm (32mm, 4.06 gm, 1h). AU. Mint WYHC (Veh-az-Antioch-Khusrau, part of the capital Ctesiphon), Regnal Year 1 (AD 590/1). Crowned bust of Varhran VI right; crescent and fillet at each shoulder / Fire altar between attendants; star to left and crescent to right of flames. Rare. Göbl I/1. The usurper Varhran Chubin had been a successful general in the East under Khusrau II's father Hormizd IV. He was recalled to Ctesiphon and after the murder of Hormizd usurped the throne as Varhran VI. Khusrau had to flee to the protection of the Byzantine Emperor Maurice Tiberius (AD 582-602) who sent troops to help him defeat Varhran and regain his throne.
