Description

SELEUCID KINGDOM. Antiochus Hierax (242-227 BC). AR tetradrachm (29mm, 16.92 gm, 12h). NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 4/5. Uncertain mint. Diademed head of Antiochus III (?) right, with youthful features but very shallow eye and sharp nose, break in bangs indicating incipient baldness at temple, unusually thin diadem ends waving downward; dotted border / BAΣIΛEΩΣ / ANT-IOXOY, Apollo seated left on omphalus, testing arrow in outstretched right hand, left hand on grounded bow with no pellets on grip to right behind; monogram in left field, bee left seen from above in exergue. SC -. SC only lists the Lampsacus mint under Antiochus Hierax for issues with a bee symbol, however the portrait on this coin is similar to Antiochus III.
