João I Real ND (1385-1433) XF45 NGC, Lisbon mint, Gomes-41.01. Known as "The Well Remembered" and Master of the House of Avis, João I's ascension to power was quite extraordinary considering he was the illegitimate son of King Pedro I and faced improbable militaristic odds during the Crisis of 1383-1385 and eventual victory against the Castile Kingdom. This fantastic specimen is an incredible tribute to the origin of the Avis Dynasty, and noted as "Unique" by Gomes. Displaying a gratifying boldness throughout, the crowned IFES and Cross of Avis are decidedly pronounced for the technical grade. The well formed flan, discernable legends, and attractive old world toning with steely pops of brightness offer an overall aesthetic that is miraculous for a piece existing for over half a millennium. A mandatory consideration for the advanced collector and a chance to procure a possibly unique specimen.
